Ray Maxwell, one of the ModPo founders, is gone
We are mourning the loss of Ray Maxwell, a ModPo founder. Ray suddenly left (not by choice) the State Department in the summer of 2012. He had always had a passion for poetry and just then learned about ModPo, which would open on September 1 that year. He enrolled and became one of our most active participants. He joined webcasts in person. He helped us organize an in-person Washington DC visit. He was part of the original Breakfast Club for DC-area ModPo people. He began to create his own online teaching experiences. We will miss his fabulous baritone, his strong & ethical opinions on poetry, his advocacy of lesser-known Harlem Renaissance poets, his advocacy of sonnets as an innovative form, his kindness to all ModPo people, and his many years as a Community TA.
Ray Maxwell was a ModPo original.

Ray is also quoted by me a number of times in Al’s new book about ModPo, The Classroom & the Crowd.
