End of week 2 update (glance ahead at week 3)
Greetings on this Friday of week 2 of ModPo 2018! Today I suggest that you read or re-read a few more week 2 poems, and prepare yourself to move on to week 3, which begins on Sunday. If that suggestion shocks you—because, let’s say, you just didn’t have enough time to read enough in week 2’s syllabus—please don’t be shocked. ModPo is open all year and you can come back to week 2, or to any week’s poems and videos, and finish up later. Meantime, what fun it is to move along with the whole group, week to week. So, yes, do a bit more of week 2 work and then get ready for week 3.
Week 3 (“chapters” 2.1 & 2.2 of our syllabus) offers some examples of the rise of poetic modernism in the U.S. We might have focused on several modernist movements here, but we chose “imagism” as our way in. So first we encounter some imagist poems, and then we look at several poems by William Carlos Williams in his imagist phase.
I’ll be back to say more about week 3 later, but meantime you could listen to the audio introduction to week 3 as a teaser.
Here are a few other announcements:
- From the week 1 live webcast, we extracted a video clip in which we talk about Dickinson’s “I Never Saw a Moor.” This poem is in the ModPoPLUS syllabus and soon I will link this video there. The clip is 8 minutes long: LINK TO VIDEO
- HERE is the link to yesterday’s week 2 live webcast. Enjoy!
- There are lots of meet-ups happening all around. Please go to the Study Groups & Meet-ups forum to find a group meeting in your area. Here’s one: ModPo’s legendary TA Molly O’Neill is convening a group in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 30, at noon local time, at Bulletproof Coffee, 300 S. Santa Fe Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90013.
- We are all looking forward to reviewing/responding to essays currently being submitted for essay assignment #1. I’ll say more about that process this weekend.
